Lichen leafy 3–6 cm across. Grows on the coast and in mountains.
There are 31 observations of Stygian Black-parmelia in Québec, mostly in Nord-du-Québec, Capitale-Nationale and Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, and it has been reported in 6 of the 17 regions.
