Fungus 4–15 cm across. Grows near water and in forests.
There are 307 observations of Smooth Rock Tripe in Québec, mostly in Outaouais, Laurentides and Estrie, and it has been reported in 13 of the 17 regions. They peak in July and August and become rare from November to February.
