Perennial herbaceous plant. Grows in forests and in mountains.

There are 380 observations of Deeproot clubmoss in Québec, mostly in Côte-Nord, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and Laurentides, and it has been reported in 16 of the 17 regions. They peak in August and September and become rare from November to April.
