Perennial herbaceous plant reaching 15 cm. Grows in forests and in thickets.

There are 14,920 observations of Cancer wintergreen in Québec, mostly in Côte-Nord, Nord-du-Québec and Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, and it has been reported in 14 of the 17 regions. They peak in August and become rare from November to April.
