Herbaceous plant reaching 25–75 cm. Grows on the coast and in marshes.

There are 30 observations of Saltmarsh rush in Québec, mostly in Bas-Saint-Laurent, Capitale-Nationale and Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, and it has been reported in 4 of the 17 regions. They peak in June and July and become rare from September to May.
