Perennial herbaceous plant reaching 2.7 m. Grows in marshes and near water. Red flowers, from May to August.

There are 259 observations of Great bulrush in Québec, mostly in Montérégie, Outaouais and Estrie, and it has been reported in 15 of the 17 regions. They peak in July and August and become rare from October to May.
