Bird 368–456 mm long. Migratory and present mostly in winter. Lives on the tundra and in marshes. Feeds on aquatic prey — fish, crustaceans, molluscs. The male and the female do not look alike. That is often what explains two very different birds in photos of the same species.

There are 2,065 observations of Lesser Black-backed Gull in Québec, mostly in Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Côte-Nord, and it has been reported in every region. They peak in April and September and become rare from November to February.
