Perennial herbaceous plant reaching 27 cm. Grows in forests and in marshes.

There are 2,876 observations of Woodland horsetail in Québec, mostly in Nord-du-Québec, Côte-Nord and Abitibi-Témiscamingue, and it has been reported in every region. They peak in May and June and become rare from October to April.
