Perennial herbaceous plant reaching 1.2 m. Grows in fields and in marshes.

There are 586 observations of Tawny cottongrass in Québec, mostly in Côte-Nord, Chaudière-Appalaches and Abitibi-Témiscamingue, and it has been reported in 15 of the 17 regions. They peak in August and become rare from November to June.
