Perennial herbaceous plant reaching 15–30 cm. Grows on the coast. Yellow flowers, from June to August.

There are 115 observations of Alpine bluegrass in Québec, mostly in Côte-Nord, Nord-du-Québec and Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, and it has been reported in 4 of the 17 regions.
