Perennial herbaceous plant reaching 1.2 m. Grows in marshes and in fields. Yellow flowers, from June to August.

There are 634 observations of Fowl bluegrass in Québec, mostly in Côte-Nord, Capitale-Nationale and Nord-du-Québec, and it has been reported in 16 of the 17 regions. They peak in June and become rare from November to May.
