Perennial herbaceous plant. Grows in conifers and in marshes.

There are 163 observations of Alpine pondweed in Québec, mostly in Nord-du-Québec, Côte-Nord and Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, and it has been reported in 12 of the 17 regions. They peak in August and become rare from November to April.
