Perennial herbaceous plant reaching 40 cm. Grows in marshes. Yellow flowers, from May to June.

There are 336 observations of Tufted bulrush in Québec, mostly in Côte-Nord, Nord-du-Québec and Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, and it has been reported in 8 of the 17 regions. They peak in June and July and become rare from November to April.
