Perennial herbaceous plant reaching 12 cm. Grows in fields and in forests.

There are 216 observations of Bigelow's sedge in Québec, mostly in Nord-du-Québec, Côte-Nord and Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, and it has been reported in 6 of the 17 regions. They peak in June and become rare from October to April.
