Bird 44–54 cm long. Migratory. Lives near water. Feeds on aquatic prey — fish, crustaceans, molluscs. The male and the female do not look alike. That is often what explains two very different birds in photos of the same species.
There are 4,504 observations of Black Scoter in Québec, mostly in Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Côte-Nord and Bas-Saint-Laurent, and it has been reported in every region. They peak in May and October and become rare from December to March.
