Bird 44–54 cm long. Present mostly in winter and migratory. Lives near water and on the tundra. Feeds on aquatic prey — fish, crustaceans, molluscs. The male and the female do not look alike. That is often what explains two very different birds in photos of the same species.

There are 7 observations of Common Scoter in Québec, mostly in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Montréal and Côte-Nord, and it has been reported in 3 of the 17 regions.
