Mammal 2.5–3.3 m long. Lives on the coast and at sea. Feeds on animal prey. Forages at sea. The male and the female do not look alike. That is often what explains two very different birds in photos of the same species.

There are 3,319 observations of Gray Seal in Québec, mostly in Côte-Nord, Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, and it has been reported in 5 of the 17 regions. They peak in August and September and become rare from November to May.
