Bird 58–67 cm long. Migratory. Lives near water and on the coast. Feeds on aquatic prey — fish, crustaceans, molluscs. The male and the female do not look alike. That is often what explains two very different birds in photos of the same species.

There are 57 observations of Common Shelduck in Québec, mostly in Montérégie, Bas-Saint-Laurent and Centre-du-Québec, and it has been reported in 8 of the 17 regions.
