Bird weighing 470–1000 g. Migratory and present mostly in winter. Lives in marshes and near water. Feeds on aquatic prey — fish, crustaceans, molluscs. The male and the female do not look alike. That is often what explains two very different birds in photos of the same species.

There are 5,615 observations of Northern Shoveler in Québec, mostly in Montérégie, Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Centre-du-Québec, and it has been reported in every region. They peak in April and May and become rare from December to March.
