Bird 39–56 cm long. Migratory. Lives in marshes and near water. Feeds on aquatic prey — fish, crustaceans, molluscs. The male and the female do not look alike. That is often what explains two very different birds in photos of the same species.

There are 4,811 observations of Greater Scaup in Québec, mostly in Montérégie, Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, and it has been reported in every region. They peak in March, April and October, but it is reported every month.
